Willow Class Spring 2 Week 2 Blog
Date: 6th Mar 2026 @ 10:10am
We have had such a full and exciting week in school, bursting with creativity, curiosity and hands‑on learning across all of our subjects.
We finished our History learning this week by designing our own commemorative stamps to celebrate the moon landing. We talked carefully about what to include in our designs — astronauts, rockets, planets and, of course, the iconic moment of stepping onto the moon. In RE, we revisited the story of Jonah and the Whale. We reflected on the key messages in the story, thinking about listening, courage and making good choices. In Music, we listened to the music of Charlie Chaplin and explored how to make long and short sounds using the instruments. We had lots of fun experimenting with different rhythms. In Science, we investigated what animals need for survival. We talked about the importance of water, air, food, shelter and caring for their offspring. In Computing, we looked at data and how we can represent information using tally charts. We practised gathering data and choosing the best way to present it.
English
Group 1 worked on using the conjunction 'because' to explain how Claire got hurt in the story. They also explored adjectives to describe the key characters.
Group 2 focused on using dialogue and sequenced their story, ready to box it up next week. The Direct Speech Song (Inverted Commas)
Maths
Year 1 learned about height, comparing objects using shorter than and taller than before ordering them.
Year 2 practised division facts linked to the 10× table and began learning their multiplication facts for the 5× table.
In PE, we played dodgeball with Miss L, which was a huge hit! With Miss Jackson, we practised our throwing and catching skills — we especially loved warming up with a game of Simon Says. Year 1 learned that g can make a /j/ sound and c can make a /s/ sound.Year 2 learned how to add –ing and –ed to CVC and CVVC words by doubling the consonant before adding the suffix.
Outdoor Learning
We have begun to chit our potatoes, ready to plant out next week. We also set up our outdoor area with sand, water, new bricks, darts and tools — all kindly bought for us by the School Friends. A huge thank you! We also explored the celebration of St David's Day. Creating daffodils, flags and dragons. What is St. David's Day? 🏴 | Newsround
Finishing the Week
It has been a joy to have the sun back out this week — we’ve loved spending time outdoors and making the most of the brighter weather. Next week is Science Week, and we are already feeling very excited! We can’t wait to explore new experiments, investigate big questions and enjoy a whole week of scientific discovery together. What an amazing World Book Day we had! We spent the whole day celebrating stories, characters, and all the things we love about reading. Our classroom was filled with every genre you can imagine — we dressed up as everything from fluffy bunnies to brave knights to energetic footballers. It was wonderful seeing everyone’s creativity shine.
One of our favourite parts of the day was sharing our wooden spoon characters. We were so proud to show off the designs we had created, and we loved seeing how different everyone’s ideas were.In class, we spent time talking about reading and what it means to us. We shared how books make us feel, from excited to calm to curious. We chatted about our favourite books and the characters we adore, as well as our favourite cosy places to read.
We had such a fantastic day celebrating stories together, and we can’t wait to keep reading and discovering even more adventures in the weeks ahead!
