Willow Class School blog Summer 1 Week 5

Date: 15th May 2026 @ 12:08pm

Another busy week complete!

In Maths this week, Year 2 have been exploring fractions, focusing on 2/4 and 3/4, and understanding that 2/4 is the same as one half. They have used practical resources and sharing to support their understanding. Year 1 have been working on subtraction, including single-digit numbers and numbers up to 20, with a focus on bridging through 10. They are becoming more confident using strategies such as rekenreks and tens frames.

In English, both year groups have been writing their own innovated versions of The Tiger Who Came to Tea. I’ve been so impressed with their creativity as they changed characters, settings and events while keeping the structure of the original story. Their confidence and independence in writing are really growing. In Phonics, Year 1 have been learning the 'tch' grapheme for the /ch/ sound, while Year 2 have been focusing on the 's' grapheme making the /zh/ sound.

In Science, we have been learning about animals and their offspring, identifying similarities between parents and young, and introducing how features are passed on through genes. In RE, we explored the story of Prophet Muhammad and the ants, helping us reflect on kindness, respect and care for all living things. The Islamic Stories of The Prophet and the Ants and The Crying Camel | Religions of the World In PSHE, for Mental Health Awareness Week, we focused on ways to 'fill our cup' and support our wellbeing by doing things that make us feel happy, calm and supported. In PE, we have started preparing for Sports Day by practising our sack races. In History, we explored the Victorian seaside by acting out key features such as bathing machines, donkey rides, Punch and Judy shows and strolling with parasols.

In our play project we have been exploring VE Day, where the children enjoyed creating their own British flags and learning about why this event is remembered. It was lovely to see their engagement and creativity. We have also had a very focused atmosphere across the school this week as Year 6 have been completing their SATs, and I’m really proud of how well all the children have supported this by staying calm and focused in their own learning. Year 1 have also been developing their cutting skills, while Year 2 have been strengthening their fluency through 60-second reads.

We have enjoyed:

  • Making my cup of things that make me happy - Bea, Alfie.
  • Making a bathing machine - Gracie and Roberta.
  • Making cars with Knex - Raf.
  • Making an army boat - George.
  • Writing facts about David Attenborough - Noah.
  • Building a lego machine  Szymon.

I am incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm and behaviour shown by all the children this week. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Have a lovely weekend!
