Willow Class School Blog Spring 2 Week 1

Date: 25th Feb 2026 @ 7:45pm

What a busy first week back!

In English, we started our new book On the Way Home by Jill Murphy. We loved hearing about Claire and all the amazing characters she meets on her journey. On the Way Home - story about children’s imagination (read aloud)

In Group 1, we worked on adjectives and alliteration to describe the different creatures.
In Group 2, we explored expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and powerful verbs to make our sentences even better.

In PE, we practised rolling the ball carefully and then created our own mini skittle games. It was great fun trying to knock everything down! We also enjoyed playing the Bean Game to warm up. We also competed in our school winter olympics.

In Science, we finished our learning on materials. We designed our own houses and chose which materials we would use. We talked about the properties of each one, like whether it was flexible, waterproof, strong or transparent.

In History, we took part in ‘The Great Space Debate’. We shared our ideas about whether space travel should happen or not, and we had brilliant arguments on both sides.

In PSHE, we talked about ways we can help other people. We each made a pledge—either something new we want to try or a way we can help our grown‑ups at home.

In Maths fluency, Year 1 worked on part–whole models, and Year 2 practised their near doubles.
In our main Maths lessons, Year 2 also explored 2× table division, odd and even numbers, and started recalling the 10× table. We even began our new times‑tables booklets to help us remember division and out‑of‑order facts. Year 1 looked at addition and subtraction facts for 16 and began comparing lengths using 'longer' and 'shorter'. We ordered ourselves in length order from shortest to longest.

In Art, we finished our Paul Klee‑inspired self‑portraits, and they look amazing! We loved using colours, shapes and patterns to create our designs.

As part of our Play Project, we learned about the beginning of the Easter celebrations, including Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. We made our own pancakes, wrote instructions, created our Lent promises and even tasted pancakes with different toppings—it was delicious! What is Pancake Day? | Shrove Tuesday for Kids

It has been lovely to see the sunshine this week, and we have begun to sort out our outdoor area ready for spring. We also started to chit our potatoes, getting them ready to plant in a few weeks—we can’t wait to watch them grow!

Next week is World Book Day, and we are really excited because we will be dressing up as different genres. We can’t wait to see everyone’s creative ideas!

Well done to Sophie who reprented our school at the 'Look who's talking' heat yesterday.

We have enjoyed:

  • Practising my running skills in PE - Daisy-Mai.
  • Making my cross for Ash Wednesday - George.
  • Competing in 'Look Who's Talking' - Sophie.
  • Writing a lent promise - Gracie.
  • Learning some new songs at guitar - Penny.
  • Drawing a picture of my friends - Bea.
  • Making an animal hotel in the small world - Loris.
  • Learning the 'al' and 'a' sound in phonics - Toby.
  • Tidying up the outdoor area - Bunny.

Have a fabulous weekend!
