Willow Class School Blog Autumn 1 Week 8

Date: 23rd Oct 2026 @ 4:10pm

This week has been another busy and enjoyable week of learning.

In English, we have been learning about verbs and how they show action in a sentence. We also explored how to add more detail to our writing by using adverbs. We thought carefully about how actions can be performed and used adverbs to make our sentences more interesting and descriptive.

In Maths, Year 1 have been learning about squares and triangles. We identified and described these 2D shapes, looking at their sides and corners, and enjoyed spotting them in our environment. Year 2 have been developing their addition skills by bridging through 10. We used our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help solve calculations and then applied this understanding to number bonds to 100. The children showed great confidence when explaining their methods and reasoning.

In Science, we reviewed our learning about animals by identifying the different animal groups and discussing the types of food they eat. We remembered the terms herbivore, carnivore and omnivore and used these to classify a range of animals.

In RE, we continued to explore Chanukah, learning more about why it is an important celebration in Judaism and discussing the traditions associated with the festival.

In History, we reviewed our learning about the Great Fire of London and summarised the reasons why the fire spread so quickly. We thought about the materials used to build houses at the time, the narrow streets and the windy conditions that contributed to the devastating impact of the fire.

In Art, we added our tree designs to our Clarice Cliff inspired plates. The children took great care with their painting and enjoyed applying the techniques and ideas we have been learning about throughout our colour mixing unit.

We have also been busy learning songs for our Nativity. We have now learnt all of our songs and the children have worked incredibly hard rehearsing. Nativity lines have been sent home, so please practise these together to help build confidence ahead of the performance. Well done to everyone for their hard work and enthusiasm this week.

Have a fabulous half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for more learning next term!
