Willow Class School Blog Autumn 1 Week 6

Date: 8th Oct 2026 @ 3:27pm

What a busy and exciting week we have had in Willow this week!

In Science, we compared the similarities and differences between animals and created our own fact files. We enjoyed sharing interesting facts and learning more about the animal kingdom.

In Maths, Year 1 explored ordering numbers and developed their understanding of the value of tens and ones. Year 2 focused on shape, identifying the edges and vertices of 3D shapes and using mathematical vocabulary to describe them accurately.

In English, we continued to practise our ladder letters. Year 1 worked on writing I can see sentences and began using and to join ideas together. Year 2 learned how to use because and prepositions to expand their ideas and make their writing more detailed.

In Music, we continued practising our harvest songs in preparation for the Harvest Festival. We especially enjoyed learning the actions to Big Red Combine Harvester and singing together with confidence and enthusiasm.

In RE, we explored the story of David and Goliath. We identified the key themes within the story and discussed how Jewish people learn from its messages about courage, faith and determination.

In Phonics, Year 1 learned the split digraph a-e, as in cake. Year 2 focused on the kn grapheme, where kn makes the /n/ sound, such as in knee and knock.

In PE, we were lucky to have a visit from Sadie from Kingshill, who helped us practise our running skills and explore different ways of moving like animals. We loved travelling in a variety of ways and developing our coordination and agility.  In History we looked at what happened to London after the Great Fire and discussed how the king helped. We also created our own Tudor house models and recreated the fire using tissue paper to see how quickly it spread.

We also began an exciting new play project based around the question, How do firefighters help the community? We created our own firefighter badges, fire engines and fire stations, and discussed the important role firefighters play in keeping us safe. We are looking forward to developing our ideas further over the coming weeks.

Have a fantastic weekend!
