Willow Class blog Summer 2 Week 5

Date: 5th Jul 2025 @ 9:50am

What a busy and exciting week we have had! We finished the week off by raising an incredible £105 towards our classroom outdoor extension. We are so proud of the hard work the children put in to make the tie dye socks, loom bands and scrunchies. They also ran the stall well, using their knowledge of money to give change correctly. With the wind to battle with they kept the raffle tickets safe and only had to save a tumbling box a few times! We are excited to get our fundraising hats back on and decide our next project for Autumn term.

In Phonics this week, we have been looking at all the sounds and spelling rules we have learnt over the last 10 weeks in phonics, it is brilliant to see how hard the children have worked on securing these sounds and in particular the strategies they use to remember tricky words. Next week we will revisit all our tricky words and recap our sounds. In English, we planned out our innovated stories ready to write them next week. We will also be writing and learning some penguin poetry.

In Geography, we enjoyed exploring the continents and oceans of the world. We also found out more about Brazil and with Julia's help made comparisions between the UK and Brazil. In Maths, Year 1s began to explore multiplication and enjoyed creating their own array cities. We began division yesterday. Y2s have enjoyed water play this week looking at capacity and litres and ml. They have looked at different sized beakers and how they each hold different capacities of water.

We have completed our transition booklets for Mrs Mckay and are looking forward to move up morning. Year 1s are very excited to show Maple children Willow class too.

Our play project this week was themed around chocolate ready for national chocolate day on Monday. We designed our own chocolate bars, made chocolate factories and created our own flags linked to Independence Day. Next week we are going to be making solar ovens to learn about chocolate's melting point. Our play project next week is themed around the theme Teddy Bear's picnic. We will be making our own invites, party hats and baskets. We will also be making sandwiches using our knowledge of instructional language and DT skills to take down to a picnic on Friday with Maple.

We also picked our radishes and tried them on Thursday! We were so impressed by the size of them and we used our senses to describe them. Spicy, tangy and chewy were some of the words we used.

We have enjoyed this week:

  • Learning about Brazil - Finley.
  • Learning all about capacity - Roman.
  • Making the loom bands and socks for our stall - Annabelle and Ivy.
  • Making water and car tracks - Raf.

Have a fabulous wekeend! We have a busy week ahead!
