Willow Class Blog Summer 2 Week 3
Date: 21st Jun 2025 @ 10:07am
What a warm week we have had! The children have been incredible, listening carefully and ensuring they stay safe in the sun.
Willow have had another very busy week of learning. We started the week by introducing our penultimate week of phonics with Year 1s learning the /ore/ sound and Year 2s homophones. We also started a new play project based around penguins based on our English Text Trixie Stickybeak. We have had penguins made, sea structures created and have taken inspiration from Sydney harbour to create our own drawings. In Maths Y1s have enjoyed learning telling the time to o'clock and half past. Y2 have continued to explore pictograms and also practise our arithmetic skills. We finished our History topic by answering the question 'How have toys changed over time?' We enjoyed discussing how materials have changed, how toys are made on mass scale and using machinery now. We also liked comparing how some toys are still made that were played with 100 years ago.
On Tuesday, we had Sports Day! The children were brilliant, all giving each race ago and being supportive of one another. We were also very impressed with our grown ups enthusiasm for the parents race! We also planned out in Art our tree of life sculptures and look forward to making them next week. In English, we have started to learn the actions to 'Trixie Stickybeak' up to the problem. Ask us if we remember the story? We focused our learning this week on storytelling language and how we can open our sentences to ensure our story interests the reader and flows together. The Year 2s also looked at adverbs of time. Next week we will delve deeper into language choices looking at adjectives and similies.
We completed our Science topic by looking at how plants adapt to different habitats. We looked at deserts, oceans, under the sea and forests describing each before matching the plant to the habitat. Thursday it began to get very hot so Miss Jackson thought about how we can improve the limited space we have in our outdoor area to maximise our play opportunities. We moved our water play and sand near our mud kitchen and put out greenhouse away as our seedlings are ready to be planted out. We also moved our small world outside and we have loved practising our oral storytelling through play. We loved playing and cooling our feet with the water.
On Friday, we practised singing our leavers songs for the church with Maple class. We also watched this video all about Summer Solstice as Saturday is the longest day of the year. We loved learning about the traditions that happen at stonehenge and I know this has inspired some of us to make our own models next week.Summer Solstice | School Assemblies | PSHE | BBC Teach We also began to plan our DT project out by taking inspiration from the story 'The Journey Home' by Frann Preston-Gannon. The Journey Home by Frann Preston-Gannon This provocked great conversation about animal presevation and how we can help protect our planet. We each designed our puppet and gave Miss Jackson a list of materials we will need. We will complete this project over a day and Miss Jackson will send more details over the coming weeks as we are on the look out for volunteers to help us with the sewing.
For our snack station this week, we picked some of our own spinach to try. We have had to remember to water our plants a lot this week. We talked about doing it early in the morning and watering the soil not the leaves so we don't damage the plant.
We also have decided that we want to fundraise for our outdoor area to be extended. After speaking to Grey's mummy we planned out a stall at our summer fayre. We are excited to get creative over the next few weeks to prepare. We are very excited to tie-dye again.
We have enjoyed this week:
- Water play - Annabelle and Ivy.
- Learning to tell the time - Roberta and Edie.
- Making my little house with furniture - Felix.
- Making a fan to keep me cool - Bea.
- Playing with the small world furniture - Octavia.
- Sand play - Raf.
- Playing darts with Archie - Roman.
- Designing my own axolotl puppet - Toby.
Have a fabulous weekend!
