Willow Class Blog Summer 2 Week 3

Date: 19th Jun 2026 @ 8:31am

We have had another busy and exciting week of learning across the curriculum!

In Maths, Year 1 have been learning to compare times using language such as quicker, slower, earlier and later, as well as practising doubling and halving numbers to 20. Year 2 have been developing their reasoning skills through problem-solving tasks, explaining their thinking and applying their understanding of number, alongside adding amounts in pounds and pence.

In English, Group 1 have been planning their own set of instructions to find pirate treasure, using time openers, adjectives and imperative verbs. Year 2 have begun planning their own diary entries, thinking carefully about writing in the first person, including feelings, and showing cause and effect.

In Science, we have started a new topic on living things, exploring how to group items by identifying whether they are alive, dead or have never been alive. In PSHE, we continued exploring growth, discussing the changes that happen as we get older and what we can do independently. In Computing, we practised using the trackpad to edit and improve text carefully and accurately. This week in Phonics, Year 1 learnt their final sound ‘ore’ (as in core). Year 2 explored homophones and near homophones.

For our Play project this week we explored all things related to the World Cup. We researched our sweepstake countries, created flags, built moving football matches and stadiums, and made clay and Lego trophies. We also practised phonics by reading nonsense words and built our longest K’Nex car, stretching halfway across the playground! We also said a special goodbye to Julia who left us on Monday to start a job closer to home, we enjoyed trying the brazillian cheese buns and celebrating the amazing support Julia gave us.

We are very excited for Sports Day on Monday and have been practising in preparation.

We have enjoyed:

  • Making a football pitch with Raf using cardboard straws and the numblobs as spectators - Roberta.
  • Making a track with Woody, Leo and Alfie using guttering - Alice.
  • Making my football using plastics trays and tissue paper - Grey.
  • Making a table football using dowles and cardboard - Archie and Noah.
  • Making a trophy using plastic, tape and yellow paint - Daisy.
  • Making a clay football and painting to match the World Cup ball design - Edie.
