Our Incredible Science Week!

What a fantastic Science Week we have had! We’ve absolutely loved exploring the theme of curiosity and asking—and answering—lots of brilliant questions. We started the week with a bang on Monday by joining the BBC for a live lesson all about space. We learnt about light sources, how light travels around objects, and even answered questions about the solar system. We especially loved the moon character from Horrible Science!

Throughout the week, we also planned our play projects with a science focus. We created life cycles, ordered the planets and carried out our own mini experiments. We made moving rainbows, built cup towers, explored bubbles, and designed new structures with our Kapla set. In our Science lessons, we explored what humans need to survive and learnt about the different food groups. We also discussed the difference between what we need and what we want, which led to some thoughtful conversations.

In Maths, Year 1 learnt how to measure objects using rulers and worked really hard in their mini quizzes, showing how much we’ve grown in confidence this term. Year 2 finished exploring the 5× table and used the factor–factor–product rule to devise number facts. We shone brilliantly in our quizzes too, demonstrating great understanding.

In Reading, Year 2 focused on developing our comprehension skills, while Year 1 began reading Grandma Bird by Benji Davies, which has already sparked plenty of discussion and prediction. In English, Group 1 boxed up our journey stories for the first time, choosing exciting creatures our character pretends to meet on her way home. Group 2 created our own recounts based on On My Way Home by Jill Murphy, explaining why we were late home. We met unicorns, dragons and even a robot—our imaginations really came to life!

In Maths Fluency sessions, Year 1 explored making even numbers, while Year 2 worked on first/now/next stories using the rekenrek to help us visualise number relationships. In DT, we examined different shapes to find the best one for the wheels of a pull‑along toy. We carefully cut out our wheels and bases, ready to assemble them next week.

Yesterday we had the most amazing day at Raf’s family farm. A huge thank you to Raf’s mum, Maya, and the whole family for welcoming us so warmly. We loved visiting the pigs, tasting healthy vegetables, feeding the cows, and learning about the farm’s history from Raf’s grandad, Will. Even though it was rainy and windy, we were full of excitement and learnt so much about science and the jobs that are connected to it.

Today, inspired by our visit, we planted our own potatoes and even tried some spinach grown in Miss Jackson’s garden. We also made special Mothering Sunday cards and messages to thank the grown-ups who help us grow. We ended this exciting week by dressing up as scientists and taking part in an amazing forensic workshop—such a memorable way to finish Science Week. We used fingerprints, footprints and DNA to solve a crime.

What we have enjoyed:

  • Making a stage out of Kapla - Roberta, Gracie and Raf.
  • Planting sunflower seeds in our greenhouse - Frankie.
  • Talking about the lifecycle of rabbits and drawing a rabbit - Daisy-Mai.
  • Solving the crime - testing the DNA - Noah.
  • Making a farm with the Kapla blocks - Sophie and Loris.
  • Tower out of Kapla - George.
  • Creating a special picture for my mum for Mothering Sunday - Bea.
  • Making a gift for Mothering Sunday - Penny.

Together we live, learn and flourish
