Willow Class Blog Autumn 1 Week 6

Date: 10th Oct 2025 @ 4:46pm

Another busy week in Willow complete.

We started the week by completing a play project themed around space week. We have enjoyed creating our own rockets, planets and space scenes. Julia bought in some incredible pictures from the space landing and we also enjoyed using her special space projector as part of our PSHE, creating a calm and reflective environment. Sophie has also earnt her DT license this week!

In Violin, we continued to learn to play with a bow and enjoyed learning the harvest songs. We are getting very confident at remembering which string corresponds to each note. In History we sequenced Amy Johnsons' life and created an emotion chart. We also used sources to suggest what happened to Amy during her final flight. We will next week explore the final flight in more detail.

In English, we planned and completed our own inventions this week. Miss Jackson is so impressed by how carefully the children are using their previous piece and story map to support their writing. We have also enjoyed reviewing kung fu punctuation (ask the children to show you!) when editing our work. In Maths Y1 completed their learning on shape and have begun looking at addition and subtraction. We have learnt what the words and signs mean and practised writing our numbers carefully in the squares in our book. Year 2 finished their shape learning by looking at 3D shapes, identifying vertices, edges and faces. On Friday we completed the tower investigation. We even in Explore and Learn used cubes to bring our towers to life. Mr Pugh was very impressed by our problem solving.  A City of Towers | NRICH.

Phonics introduced split diagraphs to Year 1s this week, beginning with a_e for cake. We talked about a and e being very chatty so a letter sits in the middle. We will learn the next two split diagraphs next week. Year 2s explored the 'kn' sound. We talked about this being unusual and the k being silent.

In Art, we completed in groups our 'Big Sculptures' using natural resources. We also met with Maple on Wednesday to practise singing Big Red Combine Harvester for Harvest on Tuesday. Big Red Combine Harvester. We also did some Yoga with them! In Maths fluency Year 1s have looked at equal groups and Year 2s bonds to 10. With Mr Batchelor this week, we have explored technology in the real world. We had to match barcodes to items and work out the cost of the total. We enjoyed exploring how barcodes work. We spent some additional time this week being shown all the resources we can use in Explore and Learn. Miss Jackson showed us the Writing Area where we played lots of phonics games, word creation and we discovered story books we could make. Woody and Alfie also made a snake using maths cubes that was longer than Miss Jackson! They used a metre stick to carefully measure.

Nativity parts have now been allocated and we will be beginning to learn the songs after Harvest festival. Information will be sent home about parts and costumes on the last day of term.

What we have enjoyed:

  • Forest school, making a clay birds nest – Woody, Leo and India.
