Willow Class Blog Autumn 1 Week 2

Date: 12th Sep 2025 @ 7:41pm

Another busy week in Willow complete! We have enjoyed exploring the change in weather this week looking at how it can go from sunny to rain to a rainbow within minutes. Please ensure children have coats in school, especially with the unpredictable weather we have at the moment.

We have begun to learn the actions to our new story Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett. Meerkat Mail By Emily Gravett-Read Aloud- Audio book (Comprehension Questions) Children's Stories - YouTube.

Year 2s have impressed us all with remembering the actions for key words and Year 1s have carefully followed along. We all looked at using adjectives to desribe settings this week and Year 2s looked at using the conjunction 'which' to describe animals. We also introduced some Kung Fu punctuation - ask the children to show you. We also completed a play project themed around meerkats this week. We have had a great meerkat bus, burrows from sand, stories and pictures drawn.

In Maths, Year 1s have looked at numberlines and finished the week today ordering numbers. We loved counting forwards to 20 and backwards too. We worked together well to order the numbers. Year 2s have looked at writing numbers in numerals and words this week. We also looked at estimating and representing numbers on numberlines - Miss Jackson was very impressed.

In History, we began to look at the achievements of Amy Johnson through using clues to find out more about her. We were very impressed that she flew solo to Australia. We used the map to find it. In Science today, we explored the sense of sight. We identified the pupils and iris of an eye and looked at how important eyelashes are for protecting our eyes from dust, pollen and insects. We turned the lights on and off to look at how the size of our pupils dilate and looked at our different iris colours. We talked about without the sense of sight - other senses like hearing become very important - we even had to find Miss Jackson in the room! Computing with Mr Batchelor included us looking at networks and digital devices. We loved forest school this week creating our own clay bowls. We also took inspiration from nature this week in Art creating sculptures of natural objects. This included a bunny rabbit, leaves, toadstools and Miss Jackson's favourite a family of slugs.

We started our violin lessons this week, learning how to hold the violin correctly and we started to learn how to play the strings. We also enjoyed finding the beat and pulse using 'If your happy and you know it'. We began cricket with Steve from Chance to shine and enjoyed playing team games.

We have enjoyed this week:

  • Making a meerkat bus with George using dowels, boxes and wheels – Roberta.
  • Enjoyed practicing writing our numbers in numerals and words – Grey.
  • Making my people characters with Felix – Alice.
  • I enjoyed making my clay character at forest school – Loris and Edie.

We loved having our grown ups in today to share a story with. The grown ups in Willow also loved sharing a story and siblings from other classes too. Thank you for attending today. We finished the day with a celebration worship, listening to Chestnut classes poems and listening to how respect has been shown in school this week. Well done to Opie, Grey, Alfie and Ralph for their head teacher awards.
