Term 1, week 8 - Friday 25th October

Date: 25th Oct 2024 @ 3:24pm

We've made it to half term!  We have many tired children in Maple who are all ready for a break!

This week we have read the book Coming to England by Floella Benjamin, continuing to think about families around the world.  We thought about how Floella's family are the same and different to ours, how she felt when her family began to move to England.  We talked about the journey they took on the ship and when we have travelled on a boat or ship.  In Explore and Learn we loved constructing our own boats and ships.  Some of us used junk modelling to do this, and some of us used the big blocks outside to build a ship.  We thought about the things we would need for our journey.

In phonics this week we have learnt the new sounds h, b, f, l.  We have done some brilliant independent writing and practised writing our capital letters too.  We  wrote our own words to match the story we read during group reading and we were really confident in writing words using our new sounds.

In music we used our imagination to create our own story for Fantasia and recorded it in a story map.

In maths we have been doing lots of number work, rolling dice and matching the objects onto a tens frame, estimating, making dens and also counting collections.  When counting collections of up to 6, we really impressed the adults with our subitising skills.

In our Explore and Learn time we have used the building blocks to create towers and talked about how tall we are in relation to them, and we have been making a house, with a bed in for each other.  Some of us have used the numicon to make a number line.  We have also been playing 'splat the word' and using our segmenting and blending skills to practise reading simple words.

We have continued to enjoy our cricket sessions, lining up our bat beautifully before striking the ball.

In forest school (our last one with Rowen this week, but don't worry, Mrs Duffey will be continuing with them after half term), we used the clay to create models, used conkers to make spiders and caterpillars, made cards and practised our writing and we had a treat of toasting marshmallows at the end of the session.  What a lovely way to end the term.

Have a wonderful break and see you all in November.

Together we live, learn and flourish
