Term 1, week 7 - Friday 18th October
Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 3:24pm
Seven weeks of Reception completed! One more week until half term, and I think they will all certainly be ready for a rest! The children have all settled in so well and built up lovely friendships with each other. Today they were doing fantastic team work when tidying away outside, they were chanting "Team work makes dream work", and I have to agree, what a lovely motto to be using during tidy up time.
This week we have been looking at 'Families Around the World' and our book focus has been The Proudest Blue. We talked about why Asiya's hijab was so special to her and her family and during Explore and Learn time the children explored the fabrics and made their own hijab. We have been thinking about where our families are from, and this week have been saying "Hello" in Polish during registration. The children have been amazing in their pronunciation of "Czesc", well done Maple Class.
We have learnt 4 new sounds this week ck, e, u, r. We talked about how when two letters make one sounds, it is called a diagraph. We have been practising writing lots of words together, segmenting the word to hear the sounds we need to write down to spell the word correctly. We also learnt our first two tricky words the and to (words which cannot be sounded out).
In maths we have been thinking about the number 7, ordering numbers, numicon and matching them to 7 objects to ensure we had counted them correctly. We printed 7 spots and made sure we counted really carefully as we printed. The children were then challenged to make a model using 7 pieces of mobilo. We carefully counted 7 objects around the classroom and placed them onto a 10's frame. We have conitnued to thing about 3-D shapes and we did a great job at remembering the names we learnt last week - cube, cone, cuboid and sphere.
In music as were musicians in our own orchestra! We all had a percussion instrument and had to watch Mrs Hopkins very carefully so that we knew when to start and stop! We then used the junk to make our own instruments.
In art this week we looked at the artist Jackson Pollock and his paintings. We learnt that he invented drip painting, and we went outside and created a class painting using this technique. We popped on our water proofs so we didn't get too messy!
Lisa from Cirencester Library joined us on Thursday and read us two stories before lunch. It was fantastic to have her join us, and many of us had met her already at our pre-school settings, or in the library. She read to us The Scarecrows' Wedding and Cock-a-doodle-poo!
In Forest School we had lots of fun, got very muddy (as you will have been able to tell), made rabbit crowns, spider webs and also enjoyed eating damper bread, which is traditionally eaten in Australia by stockmen and travellers and cooked in the ashes of the fire or in a camp oven.
Have a lovely weekend.
