Maple Class - Term 5 week 3
Date: 15th May 2025 @ 10:19pm
What another glorious week weather wise we have had this week. Maple have been really considerate of all the year 6 children taking their SATs this week, particularly when outside in the Maple garden.
This week our focus book has been Captain McGrew wants you for his crew by Mark Sperring and we have been thinking about boats and pirates. We thought about treasure maps and looked at different examples, thinking about what should be included on one. We then created our own and used tea bags dipped in water and torn up paper to create authentic looking treasure map. We also discussed what an island is and talked about how we live on an island, looking at the world map.
This week we have started with our Level 4 Twinkl phonics. We have been learning to read and write cvcc words, these are words which are four phoneme (sound) words following the pattern of consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant. They are words such as h-u-n-t, p-o-n-d, t-oa-s-t. We have also been continuing to do lots of independent writing during both our writing sessions and during Explore and Learn (more about this later).
In maths we have been thinking about the number 10, using the numicon to make pairs equalling 10, using a 10s frame and using counters to partition 10 and recording our findings on a whiteboard. We have also recapping patterns and repeating patterns.
We have continued to learn our country dancing routine and we would love to perform this to you at 3pm next Friday (23rd May) when you have been invited into school to see your child’s transport junk modelling creations, before taking them home for half term!
We had lots of excitement in Forest School this week when we discovered some fairies had descended on our Forest School area. They wrote us a letter to explain that they had been flying around looking for somewhere to stay for a while and they loved the look of our school. They made a little camp and wanted our help to make them some houses and also create a tea party for them. What fun we had - we built houses, zip wires and swimming pools were constructed along with a bonfire to keep them warm and a delicious tea party! As well as this so many of the children chose to write messages to the fairies, using their phonic skills to help them spell words. What amazing writing Maple children produced. The following morning we discovered the fairies had relocated into Maple Garden with another note thanking the children for all their creations the previous day! Wow, this consisted of the children writing them more amazing messages.
On Friday in PSED the children will hear the story Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival and will discuss what they can do if they are worried about anything.
This week can't go without a special thank you to Della's dad, who very kindly put new gravel in our gravel area and is filling our tyres up with bark to create new spaces for us to Explore and Learn in. Thank you so much, the children have loved exploring these areas.
Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to more fun in Maple class next week.
