Maple Class - Summer 3, week 4
Date: 28th Jun 2026 @ 9:50pm
Wow! What a hot week we have had, but we were so pleased with the air con in the school which enabled us to stay open as usual, even if it meant adapting our activities and timetables slightly.
Our week started with Sports Day, which was Maple’s first one and Maple’s girls running race was the very first race to start. We all did brilliantly and won so many stickers. We thoroughly enjoyed our ice lolly at the end!
This week we have been learning about minibeasts and we read the book Mad About Minibeasts by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz. We learnt lots of facts about slugs, snails, spiders, woodlice and worms. We wrote our own fact sheets about minibeasts and lots of children wrote loads of facts about lots of different minibeasts and then made them into their own books. Our writers in Maple are really growing in confidence and it is wonderful to see.
We always love playing in the small world and this week some of us showed our story creations on a story map. We wrote simple sentences to a picture to tell our story.
We enjoyed plaining our favorite minibeasts this week and we looked at pictures and small world animals to look at the shapes and colour of each minibeast.
In Phonics we have been revising our Level 4 words and continued to practice reading and writing these.
In maths we have been solving addition and subtraction problems this week using the bar method. We have also thought about time and used the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar to order the days of the week and think about what the caterpillar ate on each day of the week. We also thought about the 4 seasons in the year and objects which we had to sort into the correct seasons.
A group of children enjoyed making apple crumble in their cooking session this week. It was the first time we used our hob on our Maple oven, which was very exciting. Children learnt how to use a peeler to peel the skin off the apples and then used the knives to chop the apple up into pieces before weighing out sugar and water to use to soften the apple on the hob. We made the crumble using wholemeal flour, oats, sugar and butter and got messy mixing it together with our fingers. Well done, the individual crumbles looked amazing! I was tempted to eat them for my lunch!
Unfortunately, due to the temperature, we couldn’t do our Balanceability session this week, but don’t worry, we will double up next week.
Other activities we enjoyed this were were exploring ice and trying to work out how to realease the trapped sea creatures, creating our own animals using clay, getting creative in the art area, making minibeasts, crowns and bracelets. We also picked the amazing sunflowers that we have grown in our Maple garden and gave them to Mrs Balloch for her office and some of us made cards for her too. What a busy week we have had!
We hope you have enjoyed the sunshine over the weekend and the slightly cooler temperatures.
