Maple Class - Summer 2 week 7

Date: 19th Jul 2025 @ 11:19am

Well ... we have come to the last web blog of the year, and what an amazing year it has been.  We had a brilliant last week, we harvested the potatoes we buried in the spring term, what excitement we had digging them all up! We then washed them, chopped them up (very carefully) and popped them in the airfryer to cook … oh my goodness, they were delicious and got all eaten up before we went home on Wednesday.  Sophie said “I don’t just like potatoes … I love them!”

We also went down to the Forest School area and picked the apples off our trees.  We had a selection of cooking apples and eating apples.  These were ready early this year due to the amazing weather we have been having.  We collected 4 boxes of cooking apples and 1 box of eating apples.  The children were all intrigued how the cooking apples taste different to the eating apples … therefore we of course had to have a taste test!  The realised the cooking apples taste a lot more sour, are bigger and are green compared to the red eating apples.  We did lots of maths around the apples and lots of mathematical observations.  We talked about how we could eat the cooking apples and this lead to us making a big apple crumble and then eating this for our snack on Thursday after our Leavers Assembly at the church.  We invited Mrs Wood to join us and we all gobbled it down!  Many of us had two portions.

We enjoyed reflecting on our time in Maple class and wrote sentences around things we have enjoyed throughout the year.  We have all come so far since learning our first sounds in September in phonics – well done and keep up the wonderful work with your reading and writing.

We of course said goodbye to our current year 6’s this week.  The Leavers Assembly at church was lovely and it was great to hear all their reflections about their time at Ampney Crucis before they start on their next learning journey.  Maple class presented each year 6 with a self portrait which they had been busy painting over the last couple of weeks, and a keyring with their name and coloured beads, which they had threaded and made too.

We also had to say a very fond farewell to Mrs Wood too.  As well as being our Head Teacher she has also taught Maple every Wednesday afternoon when we have had our planning and preparation time, teaching Maple RE.  As well as this she has often popped in and out of our classroom throughout the day, attended our trips to the pantomime, farm, Cheltenham Town Hall and the Bristol Zoo project.  She will be missed.  We had a special assembly to celebrate Mrs Wood on Thursday afternoon whereby Key Stage 2 shared their memories of her.  Each class presented her with a card - Maple's card had wonderful paintings of our sunflowers on the front (which we have grown in our Maple garden) and a self portrait of each member of Maple class in the middle.  We also presented her with 2 large hessian covered tins full of her favourite things - coffee, sweets, biscuits, pens, post it's, a notebook, hand cream and more!  We also gave her a bunch of the gorgeous sunflowers that we have grown in Maple.  Good luck at your new school Mrs Wood.

My last web blog to you needs to thank you once again for all your generous gifts and gorgeous cards – all of which will be treasured.  Mrs Cordell and myself were very touched.  My first year at Ampney Crucis has been very special and I couldn’t have asked for a better class to teach – they have all been wonderful.  Thanks also for your support this year.  I wish you all a very safe and happy summer holiday, and lets hope the wonderful weather continues for us all.  We look forward to seeing you all again in September and continuing to see the children move into year 1 and continue their wonderful educational journey.

Take care, Mrs Duffey
