Maple Class - Summer 2, week 6

Well, we cannot believe that we have just had our penultimate week in Maple class together. This week we have continued to think about where animals live and have been thinking about the coral reef. We continued to look at the book Tiddler by Julia Donaldson and mapped out Tiddler’s coral reef and wrote some fantastic sea creature captions.
Monday afternoon we watched Oak Class dress rehearsal of Cinderella, which we all really enjoyed. We are so grateful, yet again, this week to have such a lovely air conditioned school, meaning we could carry on as normal and stay nice and cool at school.
We have been getting creative this week in making some wonderful cards for our year 6 leavers, ready to present to them during their leavers assembly next week.
In Forest School we went on another minibeast hunt and continued to discover lots of minibeasts living in our Forest School area. We also did some more caption writing saying where we found different minibeasts.
In maths we have been learning our number facts up to 9. We have also been solving problems around money, such as looking at different coins, thinking about their size and shape as well as sorting. On Friday we dug up the two different types of potatoes that we have grown and enjoyed weighing them. We discovered that we have less of one type, but these were bigger and therefore weighed more than the other type of potato where we had many more, but they were a lot smaller. Wonderful discussions were taking place while predicting and telling each other what we thought.
We have enjoyed varnishing out 3d clay sculptures of animals this week – many were sent home on Friday, so we hope the children enjoyed telling you about them! Those that were not send home needed a little bit of TLC, and will come home next week!
On Thursday Maple visited Willow class for the morning, and by the sounds of it had a wonderful time. We loved hearing all about it when they returned to us. We enjoyed having our September 2026 Maple children in, they all seemed so small compared to the Maple children about to leave us. It is always lovely to reflect on how much learning they have done in the year and how much progress they have made.
Thursday afternoon we read the book Somebody Swallowed Stanley by Sarah Roberts and thought about how it is so important to look after our oceans and what we can do to help do this. We had a great discussion, particularly around not dropping rubbish and ensuring we can recycle or reuse things if possible.
Unfortunately it was, once again, too hot to do our last balanceability this week, so we will definitely fit this in next week so all children have received equal sessions.
On Friday the last group of children made their apple crumbles. They were reflecting on everything we have made since we started our cooking sessions and the skills they have learnt too. Everyone agreed they love the cooking sessions, and the cheese pinwheels were a particular hit!
Well done to Arlo, Lottie, Lili, Eddie and BeaBea, who all received certificates in our Celebration Assembly this afternoon.
Most of you have now brought in a Bag for Life for your children’s belongings to come home in next week – if you haven’t done so, please bring one in ASAP so they are not struggling out of school with a pile of things next week!
We collected in all the phonics reading books on Friday and reading diaries, which do have your Twinkl Learner Logins in. I have printed out a copy of the logins for you and we will send these home next week, so you can still have access to the Rhino readers online to read over the summer. It would be great if you could continue to read with your child over the summer so as they don’t forget all the things we have learnt and are ready to hit year 1 running. Of course enjoy your summer too, but if you can dip in and out of these books it would be fantastic.
