Maple Class - Summer 2 , week 5

Date: 2nd Jul 2026 @ 8:47pm

This week we have been learning about animals that live under the sea.  We read the story Tiddler by Julia Donaldson and thought about what it is like in the coral reef and what lives there.  We knew that Nemo came from the coral reef.  We have used the instruments to match sounds to different sea creatures, we listened carefully to each instrument and looks at how it could be played in different ways.

In RE this week we learnt about the Qur'an and learnt how it is the muslim holy book.  We had a go at colouring in our own symmetrical patterns like the patterns found in the Qur'an.

In Forest School this week we read the story Nature Trail by Benjamin Zephantahs and looked for creatures living in Forest School.  We found woodlice, snails, slugs, spiders, ladybirds, millipedes, ants and lesser stag beetles.  We made sine fabulous sea creature creations at forest school using natyral materials and also did leaf rubbings.

We enjoyed making our own corel reef using the small world and were really creative and thought about how we could make some coral.  We also made lots of other sea creatures in our creative area.

On Thursday there was much excitment in Maple's garden when we discovered some fairies had come to visit us and let us a note.  This sparked so much converstaion "how did they get here?", "how long will they stay for?", "why aren't they moving?" "lets see if they have left any clues", "I wonder what they do all day?" ...  This then led to so much team working, planning, letter wrirting, clue hunting, creating their own new fairy gardens, creating a vast amount of play equioment for them - from swings, zip lines, sea saws, paddling pools - the possibilities were endless.  Notes and signs were posted all over the outside area for the faries to read.  Wow, what a lot of learning took place.  On Friday the excitment continued when they discovered the faries had left more letters for them, including a mini tricky word books, which the children loved reading.  A larger fairy garden was made in the builders tray and the creativeness continued.

The secod cooking group made their apple crumble.  We really looked closely at the numbers on the scales to match to the weight of the ingrediants we were weighing.  We used the peelers and knives with such care and followed instructions well, so as we were using equipment safely.

We read the story of The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson and thought about what we might find in a rock pool.  Lots of discussion took place about when the children had been rock pooling on holidays and the discoveries they had made.

In maths we have solved problems involving 2d shapes.  We looked closely at a variety of 2d shapes and talked about thier properties and names.  We then played Kim's Game and had to recognise which shape was missing.  We enjoyed making our own pictures using 2d shapes on Friday, many of them fairy or sea creature themed.

On Friday did a double Balanceability session to make up for the one missed last week due to the hot weather.  Again, children were able to listen, follow instructions and really improve their balancing and gliding skills, negotiate around obsticles and imprve their balancing skills.  They were fantastic at following instructions too.

We look forward to seeing lots of you at the school fete today, enjoy another weekend of sunney weather.  We can't believe we only have two weeks left together.

Together we live, learn and flourish
