Maple Class - Summer 2, week 3

Date: 19th Jun 2026 @ 12:52pm

This weeks focus story has been What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson  It was a familiar story and our recall and understanding was brilliant.  We talked about all the different animals that live on a farm and what their home is called.  We have done some fabulous independent writing, writing notes to the ladybird.  We matched instrument sounds to the sounds farm animals make, we had to listen really carefully.  We looked at the map in the story which was drawn by the robbers and we drew our own maps of the farm.  We had to include all the things on the list. We thought about different farm animals and the names for the male, female and baby animals, we learned so much!

In maths we have been practicing our bonds to 2, 3, 4 and 5.  We matched dominoes to the correct total and wrote number sentences to match.  We have also been solving problems to do with direction and been following instructions for find treasure or to get ourselves to a specific target.

We read the story of The Gruffalo in Forest School and thought about the animals that live in a wood.  We decided to make a house for the mouse to keep him safe.  We made a den for the Gruffalo.  We looks at all the apples that had fallen off the tree and looked closely at them, we could see some had spots and stripes.

In Phonics we have been continuing revising reading and writing words with adjacent consonants that are either at the beginning or end of a word.  We also continued with our phonics assessments.  We played a pairs game with the level 4 tricky words.

In RE we thought about how the bible story teachers Christians to treat each other.  We read the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector and thought about how the story teaches us to not steal from people, be nice to each other, try to help someone who is being mean, tell people to stop.  The bible teaches us that we should ask Jesus to help us to be honest in all we do.

In PSED we read the book What We'll Build by Oliver Jeffers and thought about working towards simple goals and being able to wait when necessary, working and playing cooperatively.

Another group of children made cheese pinwheels on Thursday and yet again the classroom smelt delicious. We hope you enjoyed eating these at home.  Children were able to follow a set of instructions, use a knife safely and roll up the pastry.

The last group of children started their balanceability sessions today and there was lots of excitement from them.  We thought about how to be controlled in a side to side movement and learnt the concept of weight transfer and the effects of balance.  The children were introduced to the balance bike and they learnt the technique of self-propulsion/momentum.  The had a go at gliding on the balance bike and began to gain confidence and control.

We have been creative and made cards and a present for our daddy’s for Fathers Day and we have thought about how our daddy’s are special. Please check your child's bag for their creations.

In Dough Disco we have been exercising our hand muscles as well as completing play dough challenges of creating a far animal and making our name our of play dough – always one of our favorite times of the day!

Our sunflowers are in full bloom now and look amazing in our outside area.  We have done lots of gardening this week and enjoyed helping Mrs Cordell plant more plants.  We have one strawberry ready to eat and also lots of lettuce.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend in the sunshine.

Together we live, learn and flourish
