Maple Class - Summer 1, week 5
Date: 14th May 2026 @ 3:17pm
This week in Maple class we have begun to learn about travelling in space. We loved how Baby Bear used his imagination to go on hi space adventure in the story Whatever Next! By Jill Murphy. We used some of the things we learnt in the story in our small world play and wrote lists of things we would take into space.
We begun to learn about travelling in space. We loved how Baby Bear used his imagination to go on his own space adventure in the story Whatever Next! By Jill Murphy.
We found out that the moon doesn’t light up on its own, the sun shines on the moon so as we get light. It reflects it. We did our own experiment to see which objects reflect the light, just like the moon.
In Phonics we continued thinking about adjacent consonants in words and wrote amazing words, captions and sentences. Well done Maple.
In maths we practiced our subtraction skills with a game. We used the 10 frames to solve subtraction number sentences and we were brilliant! We also looked at problem solving and patterns. We could recognise patterns, continue them and create our own.
In music this week we have been watching the BBC Cbeebies Proms “Off To The Moon”. We loved listening to the different types of music, noticing the tempo (speed), dynamics (loudness, quiet), pitch (high, low) and also identified the different instruments.
In RE we thought about what makes a mosque holy for Muslims. We thought about how they go to a mosque to learn how to worship their God – Allah, more about their religion – Islan, how to pray and study and about their holy book – the Qu’ran. We learnt that a mosque is very special to Muslims and they go there to pray 5 times a day and sometimes they sleep there during Ramadam. They always pray towards the holy city of Mecca and the Imam teaches them about the Qu’ran and how to live a good life. We also learnt that men and women have their own separate rooms to pray in.
In our EY and KS1 Assembly we heard the story of Kindness Makes Me Stronger by Elizabeth Cole. We thought about how kindness and compassion is a wonderful thing and how it can change someones day.
On Thursday we thought about how rockets work and watched a fascinating video of this. We learnt about the launch, the separation and the landing of a rocket and thought about different moves to represent these. We put these moves together to make up a short dance sequence.
We have also been designing our own rockets and making a list of things we need to make our rocket. A list will be coming home today and we would appreciate it if you could have a hunt around at home and gather what you can and bring into school on Monday 18th May, ready for the children to make their own rockets next week in class. For our Dough Disco Challenge after our Dough Disco session, we made our own rockets.
On Friday we were busy with another group of children making biscuits – again the classroom smelt delicious! The second group of children also started their balanceability set of sessions. Well done to all children.
Friday afternoon we read the book Ruby’s Worries by Tom Percival and thought about how we can express our own feelings and consider the feelings of others, and show sensitivity to their own and to others needs. We also had our ‘boys’ Show and Tell session – lots of excitement around this. Children were able to stand up and talk about their item and answer questions.
We hope you all have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you for our last week before half term.
