Maple Class - Summer 1, week 4

Date: 8th May 2026 @ 8:27am

We have been creating our own pirate stories this week in Maple class.  When we were in Forest Schol we were so creative in our story making – BeaBea made a soup for the pirates with some brilliant ingredients!  We made rowing boats for the pirates to go ashore and find their treasure.  We also checked around the area for bugs and some even crawled on us!  We had so much fun climbing the trees and showed amazing resilience and perseverance to gain confidence to climb.

In Phonics this week we have continued to read and write words with adjacent consonants which appear at the beginning of words, such as ‘track’ ‘cliff’ and ‘stop’.  On Thursday we used double sided coloured counters to help us write our sentences, thinking about how many words we need to write, and as we write them, turning the counter over, making sure we remember each word and then checking our writing afterwards.

In maths this week we have been partitioning 10 and adding to 10, combining groups to make 10 on a 10’s frame.  We have also been looking at position and language to describe position.

In RE we learnt that a mosque is a special holy place for Muslims to go. We looked at pictures of different mosques and noticed what was the same, and what was different.  We also learnt more about what it is like to go to a mosque.

We made some amazing biscuits in Maple on Thursday – the classroom smelt delicious!  Children who cooked this week did weighing, cracking eggs, whisking, mixing using an electric hand whisk, noticing changes, rolling and cutting with biscuit cutters.  We hope you enjoy eating them at home.

We thought about David Attenborough, who turns 100 tomorrow.  We watched a short film on him and thought about the amazing things he has achieved in his life.  We then decided we wanted to make him a birthday party, birthday cards and celebrate his birthday in different ways during Explore and Learn.  We thought about all the places he has explored in the world and constructed modes of transport that he may have travelled around the world in.  Eddie made an amazing airplane out of junk modelling, and Lottie and Ottilie made him a present.  Olivia made the most amazing birthday card and included some handmade money, a voucher and drawings of animals in it.

On Friday we read the book Little People, Big Dreams about David Attenborough.  We then joined Willow class for a special assembly celebrating Sir David Attenborough and special guest Steve Backshall.

Friday saw the first group of Balanceability children finish their sessions.  They were wonderful, listened brilliantly and followed instructions.  Children have learnt to mount and dismount their bike safely.  They have learnt to glide and balance on the bike, stop in a controlled way and become aware of other riders around them.  They have learned to turn and lean in a controlled way and worked toegther as a team.  The next group of children will start their block of balanceability sessions next week.

Well done to BeaBea, Lili, Finley and Joey, who have all received Celebration Awards in assembly this week.

Together we live, learn and flourish
