Maple class - Spring 2, week 4
Date: 22nd Mar 2026 @ 12:01pm
In Maple class this week our book focus has been The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We thought about the story sequence and used the story telling props to order the lifecycle of a caterpillar.
In Phonics this week we learnt our final level 3 sounds - 'ure' (as it pure, cure, manure) and 'er' (as in letter, better, mermaid). We practised reading and writing words, captions and sentences containing these sounds. Our letter formations are also getting more consistent, well done Maple!
In maths we were taking away from 7 – we wrote down some great number sentences and used coloured counters to help us, working in partners. We also looked at 2d shapes and enjoyed going on a shape hunt around our school looking for different shapes and talking about what we could see.
In RE we continued to think about why crosses are put on Easter gardens. We talked about why the Easter story is important for Christians, thinking about how the story moves from sadness to joy and how Jesus loves everyone and will always be with them. We discussesd how Christians celebrate Easter to remember that Jesus is always with them and there is always hope. We thought about how there is new life in the Easter story.
In PSED we read the story Monkey Puzzle and thought about all the things we are good at.
In Forest School this week we did lots of tidying in our Maple garden including lots of weeding, bushing up the stones and planting our potatoes, herbs and strawberry plants. We had a good look at all the beautiful bulbs we planted and all the spring flowers which are growing.
In PE we continued with our ball skills and looked at all the different ways we can throw a ball – over arm, under arm and chest pass – we then practised these with a partner and counted to see how many passes we could do before we dropped the ball. We thought about how our bodies feel when we exercise and the importance of warming up and cooling down.
We did lots in Explore and Learn this week – we painted beautiful water colour pictures of the amazing sunrises and sunsets we have been having this week – how great is it to have had so much sun! We looked at the colours and then created our own gorgeous pictures. We also draw them using chalk and labelled them too. We loved being in the mud kitchen this week, writing out menus and taking orders. We have enjoyed making caterpillars using the different coloured play dough, making a repeating patters for the body. We have used scissors to cut out leaves, our scissor skills have improved so much since starting Reception.
Lisa from the library came in and read stories to us this week – we had Sugarlump and the unicorn by Julia Donaldson and also The Three Little Unicorns and the Big Bad Dragon.
What a busy week! We hope you have a wonderful weekend and make the most of the gorgeous sunny weather.
