Maple class - Spring 2, week 1

Date: 1st Mar 2026 @ 7:49pm

Welcome back after half term.  It was wonderful to see some sun this week and the children all enjoyed being outside exploring the garden in some less soggy weather! We loved Forest School where we observed all the changes - we noticed that all the bulbs we planted have started to grow and observed that the leaves are different shapes - we learnt that the straight leaves will be daffodils and the curved ones will be tulips. We spotted signs of new life in the Forest School area and used magnifying glasses to look at the buds and the flowers.

This week our book focus has been Jack and the Beanstalk, as our new question this term is - I wonder how things grow?  We read the story and learnt about the lifecycle of a bean and how the roots grow down and the shoot grows upwards.  We used our imagination in Drawing Club to think about what the giant looked like in Jack and the Beanstalk and thought about a magic way into the castle.

In phonics we learnt two new diagraphs (one sound contianing two letters) - these were 'or' (fork, pork) and 'ur' (fur, turnip), and our new tricky word this week was 'they'.  We wrote amazing sentences and captions using our new sounds and practised spotting them in words when reading.

In maths we met 'Blockzilla'.  He helped us compare numbers using maths language bigger, more, greater, higher, smaller, less, fewer and lower.  We also thought about our day and the sequence we do things in.

In our ukulele lessons this week we learnt how to play the 'c' chord and we had to press down the red spots on our instruments.  Leigh played a game with a ball - everytime it bounced we had to play D or C.

On Friday we had a whole school Olympic Winter Sports morning - we had such fun.  The whole school was split into 5 teams and named different countires - we had the USA, Germany, Italy, Norway and Netherlands.  We then rotated around different sports including curling, bobsleigh, ski jump and snowballs. We learnt about the Winter Olympics by watching a short video before we went into the hall to begin.

Maple was very excited to have a new memeber join our class this week - welcome Finley, it's lovely to have you join us.

Well done to Ruby, Joey, Finley, Rogan and Myles who all received certificates in our celebration assembly this week.
