Maple class - Autumn 2, week 6
Date: 14th Dec 2025 @ 8:23pm
This week we featured in Willow’s nativity of The Bethlehem Bakeoff . We joined in with their songs and performed it to the rest of the school and our parents. A lot of us felt scared and nervous, but afterwards we all said we enjoyed it.
In Phonics we have been amazing at using our phonic knowledge to read and write words. We have been looking at the medial sound ‘o’ and read and made words with magnetic letters such as hat, sock, dog, pot. We then put what we have learnt into reading sentences – we are getting much quicker at this and remembering what we have read. Mrs Cordell made a treasure hunt for the children to read and follow clues to collect things around the classroom, it was lots of fun.
In maths we have explored weight and have enjoyed exploring the scales to see how we could make the buckets heavier or lighter. We have also thought about capacity this week and how this is different to weight. We looked at different containers and talked about how much they would hold and compared them.
In Explore and Learn we retold the nativity story in lots of different ways. Some children made a stable using the den building resources. Some children used the duplo to build a stable and used the nativity figures to retell the story and some used the large wooden construction blocks outside. We used the musical instruments to learn to play the beat along to Christmas songs and are getting really good at playing in time to the music. We have also enjoyed using the role play area to make a Christmas dinner and decorated the area with tinsel. We also loved using the mud kitchen outside to make a Christmas cake, following the recipe from one of the nativity songs: “Butter and sugar, mix them well, sensibly sift the four. Add the eggs, but don’t over beat, folding keeps the air …”
A kind lady from our village brought in a nest for us to look at, it was so beautiful and we thought it looked soft and cosy.
We have read a variety of Christmas books this week which we have all enjoyed, choosing from a selection in the book area and voting for our favorite ones to read.
On Friday for PE we enjoyed playing a variety of games outside before coming in to take part in a mindful relaxation session, this was followed by mindful colouring which is a simple, meditative activity where you focus on the present moment by colouring patterns or themed images to reduce stress, calm the mind, and improve focus. It works by engaging the brain in a repetitive, absorbing task, lowering heart rate and blood pressure, and acting as a self-regulation tool for managing emotions by shifting attention from worries to the colours and shapes at hand. All children really enjoyed this time, and we had our relaxing fire place music playing in the background – which all children ask for, especially on cold wintery days!
We hope all the children who attended the disco on Friday had a wonderful time, they were certainly very excited about it on Friday in class.
One more week to go and with lots of exciting activities planned next week, it is sure to whizz by.
