Maple Class - Autumn 2, week 3
Date: 21st Nov 2025 @ 1:21pm
This week we read Emergency! By Margaret Mayo and Alex Ayliffe and talked about all of the people in our community that help us. We learnt about the emergency services – police, fire, ambulance and coast guard, as well as other people who help the community such as vets, doctors, nurses, post men and bin men.
We have written our letters to Father Christmas this week. We were fantastic at using our sound knowledge to listen for the sounds we could hear in each word.
In Phonics this week we have focused on words which contain medial ‘a’. We have been brilliant at blending and segmenting CVC words such as map, fan, pad, can. We used magnetic letters to make words and at the end of the week labelled pictures – Mrs Duffey and Mrs Cordell were so impressed that we took the children to Mr Batchelor and Mrs Chadwick to show them our work, they were equally impressed. We have also really started looking at the letters we have learnt so far, going over them to ensure we have the correct letter formation when writing them, we've all been working really hard and our letters are looking brilliant.
In Maths this week we were thinking about the number 8, we used the instruments to count out 8 sounds and made some music (see the video below!) We were amazing at stopping after playing 8 sounds. We also looked at length again and used the language longer than and shorter than to compare two lengths of objects. Outside we found two objects to compare and also during the challenge time after Dough Disco we used to think about length and make different length objects.
In Forest School this week we thought about fire as a source of light, and made our first fire. We knew that fire can be dangerous and so we needed to be safe when we have a fire. We noticed lots of charcoal in the bottom of the fire pit and we used this to do some mark making.
In Art we thought about the colours we can see in a fire and used pastels to mix the colours. Our hands got very messy!
In RE this week we acted out the nativity story, identifying which characters were important for each part of the story. We also learnt the word ‘incarnation’.
On Thursday afternoon we decided to plant some of the 300 bulbs that we had delivered last week into the lovely planter that was made by some volunteers in the summer. We cannot wait to see what colours the flowers are when they grow. We planted some tulips and crocuses. We also filled up our amazing sandpit that was also made in the summer – it took over 30 bags of sand! We are looking forward to it warming up a bit to make full use of it! Most children found it too cold to explore outside much this week, and chose to stay warm inside with the fire glowing on the whiteboard listing to piano music! Those of us who did venture outside were intrigued by the ice in the water tray and enjoyed discovering how to break the ice and release the sea creatures that had been frozen inside!
In PSED we continued to talk about having empathy and teamwork and thought about times we have had to work as a team to achieve something.
In PE we did some yoga this week, thinking about building muscle strength and improving flexibility and balance, which helps with motor skills and coordination.
Thank you to Jey for sharing his amazing scrap book on his exciting trip to India, we loved looking at it.
Have a wonderful weekend and see you next week. Don’t forget Wednesday 26th November is our Superhero Day in Maple where children can come dressed as their favorite superhero. On Thursday 27th November it is our Christingle Service at the church and we will be making our Christingles during the day – please provide your child with an orange, red ribbon and some dried fruit. Many thanks.
