Maple Class - Autumn 2, week 1

Date: 7th Nov 2025 @ 12:15pm

This week we have begun thinking about our new big questions ‘I wonder what makes a Superhero?’. We thought the answer was… "saving people",  "wearing a costume", "being a grown up"

We read Little Red Riding Hood and thought about who the hero was ... “The Woodcutter because her saved Little Red Riding Hood and Granny”, “The woodcutter got rid of the big bad wolf”, “The woodcutter knew the wolf wanted to eat them”

We used masks to retell the story and to create our own version! In our story, the police came and took the wolf away after the woodcutter had hit him on the head.

We read different versions of the story and thought about the things that were different - in one story Little Red Riding Hood stopped to pick flowers, in the other she went straight to Granny’s, in one story Granny hid in the wardrobe, in the other she hid under the bed, in one story the woodcutter hit the wolf over the head, in the other he killed the wolf.  We thought about how we could make up our own versions of the traditional tale.

In Forest School, we were set challenges to help Little Red Riding Hood. Some of us built a trap to catch the wolf, some of us made a new home for Little Red Riding Hood and Granny to live in, some of us made food for Little Red Riding Hood to share with Granny. We had some brilliant ideas and worked as a team to create our ideas.

In Phonics we have learnt more new sounds this week – h, b, f and l. We have been focusing on forming each of the letters correctly and have learnt about ascenders. Each phonics session helps us to improve our blending and segmenting skills and we are making amazing progress!  We have enjoyed playing the Buried Treasure phonics game - going over our phase 2 sounds.

In Maths, we continued to learn about number 7 including learning how to use a number track to count 7 objects and listening really carefully to count up to 7 sounds – this was particularly tricky! In addition, we have been practicing forming each numeral correctly, numbers 2,5 and 8 proved the most difficult.  At the end of each Dough Disco session on Thursday and Friday we were set a challenge around the number 7 - creating the number out of playdough, making 7 prints in the playdough, making different shapes and cutting our playdough into 7 pieces.

We have already begun thinking about the Nativity story as, in addition to learning the songs for our performance with Willow Class, our question for RE this term is ‘Why do Christians perform Nativity plays at Christmas?’, and we began investigating this by identifying the important people in the story.

In PE we introduced the parachute and enjoyed playing parachute games outside.

In PSED at the end of the week we read the book Coming to England by Floella Benjamin and Diane Ewen.  We discussed the importance of empathy towards others and teamwork.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.  We hear a lot of you are off to see firework displays, enjoy and we look forward to hearing about them next week.

Together we live, learn and flourish
