Maple class - Autumn 1, week 7

Date: 17th Oct 2025 @ 12:08pm

This week our focus book has been What The Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson.   We have been thinking about ‘communication’ and how we hear, how we speak and we thought about our 5 senses,

In Phonics this week we have leant our next 4 sounds – g, o, c & k.  Our blending and segmenting is really coming on and we have started to sound out words for spelling such as a cap, Kit, dog.  Well done Maple, brilliant work and writing this week.  We have still be practicing writing our name each morning and again, we are really impressed with the progress we have seen since September.  Our letter formations are improving every day too.

In maths this week we have been concentrating on the number 6.  We watched Numberblocks 6 this week, thought about 1:1 counting to 6 and writing the number 6.  We have also counted 6 items onto a numbertrack.  We also started to look at 3d shapes and compared these to the 2d shapes we are familiar with.  We thought about how we could describe the shapes using words such as flat, curved, it is like …  We learnt the 3d shape names sphere, cube, pyramid, cone, cylinder and cuboid, See if you can spot any of these at home and talk about the shapes with your child.

In RE this week we read the story of the Precious Pearl.  This story is a parable from Matthew 13:44-46.  It teaches Christan’s about God’s love for them and how God should be the most important thing in a Christian’s life.  We talked about what things were really special and important to us at home and how we keep them safe.

In Forest School this week we took part in a Hearing Circle to see what sounds we could hear. We heard children doing PE, rustling, birds, cars …  We then explored the area and made our own Autumn Leaf wreaths – we hope you liked them.  We also enjoyed using the magnifying pots and glasses to look more closely at things in the forest school area – we looked closely at the spirals on a snails shell, stones and leaves.  There was much excitement when we discovered a frog in the pond too!

In Art we made some pictures using leaves and stuck them onto sticky back plastic to preserve them.  We thought about the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and all the different pictures we can make out of leaves.

We of course walked to the church on Tuesday for our Harvest Festival.  Thank you for all your food donations and for those of you who were able to join us.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week.

Note – Please remember to send your child in with their school reading book, reading diary, phonics folder and phonics sounds every day.  We update the phonics sound tags every week with the new sounds we have been learning and cannot do this if they are not in their book bag. Many thanks.

Together we live, learn and flourish
