Maple Class 26-27 - Autumn 1, week 2

What a wonderful first full week we have had at school.  The children really have settled into the school routines so well, and everyone around the school is so impressed at how they are following the school rules, lining up and demonstrating their independence.

This week we were thinking about the Three Little Pigs story and we thought about rhymes in speech – “Little pig, little pig, let me in.  Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin.  Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in.”  We got really creative and used the duplo to create the 3 pigs houses.

We thought about what we looked like when we were younger and talked about how we have changed.  We looked at our baby photos and had a guess at who was who!  We made some fantastic observations on how we have changed.

In maths we have enjoyed singing number songs this week including 5 little ducks and 5 current buns.  We also had a look at 2d shapes and looked around out classroom to find objects and sorted them into if they were a square, triangle, circle, rectangle or diamond.  We have also enjoyed doing the puzzles in the classroom, working with our friends and sharing brilliantly.

In our phonics sessions we thought about rhyming words and made up rhyming strings.  We also found objects around the classroom which rhyme and paired them together, such as a bear on a chair, a pear on a chair, a fox on a box and a snake in a lake!  We also made up silly rhyming strings with nonsense words!  We also met Mr Crow and thought about alliteration, whereby we thought about words which begin with the same sounds.  We played Cross the River and children had to identify the initial sounds of objects to cross the river to have tea with Mr Crow. 

We have also began to learn how to form the letters in our name and how to hold a pencils / pens.  Alongside this we have been doing Squiggle while you Wiggle and Dough Disco sessions, building up our muscles so as we will be successful writers. 

In PE We had our first PE lesson with Mrs Gardiner.  We absolutely loved it.  We explored different balls and talked about which ball was easiest to use for ball games.  We lifted the balls, gently rolled them and did up and over games too – great control.  On Friday we went on the Trim Trail in our garden and demonstrated turn taking, balancing and showed control in moving around the course.

In PSHE we read the book Tabby McTat by Julia Donaldson and talked about resilience and what this word means.  We discussed how this is demonstrated in the story.

On Friday, in the library, we read the book Try by Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield and thought about what makes someone a hero.  The children had a think and shared who their heros were:

Jude – Mummy

Luna – Woody & Marley

Oliver – Mummy

Oscar – Annabel

Oliver – I enjoyed playing with the dinosaurs

Oscar – I enjoyed being the brother in the home corner and Bethan was the mum!  I am excited for Forest School.

Rosalie – I enjoyed being outside and playing with the baby dolls.

Well done to everyone in Maple class who got an award in assembly this week for impressing us with how well they have settled.
