Maple Class 26-27, Autumn 1, week 5
Date: 2nd Oct 2026 @ 3:31pm
This week we read The Gingerbread Man and loved joining in with the repetitive phases. We discussed who enjoyed cooking like the old lady – lots of us do! On Friday our first group of children made Gingerbread Men – yet again the classroom smelt delicious, and the smell radiated around the whole school, but oh my goodness, when they were baking over lunchtime they went missing from the oven! We came back from singing assembly to flour footprints all over the classroom and a clue on a baking tray of crumbs, so we set about solving where they had disappeared to! What a fun afternoon we had finding them! We had lots of excitement and lots of giggles too!
Earlier on in the week we looked at the toys we played with when we were younger and the things we like to do now.
We continued to learn about maps. We made a large map of the Gingerbread man’s town using blocks. We thought about all things we find in a town.
In phonics we have continued to learn our level 2 sounds – i, n, m, d. We have been amazing at remembering the sounds we have learnt so far and we are starting to use them to read and write. We used the magnetic letters to write CVC words and we were fabulous at playing a blending game to read words too. We have really been practicing writing our letters and we enjoyed forming our letters in bubbles and writing on the white boards.
In PE we have been learning to control a ball with a racket. We realised that it is easier if we use both sides.
In maths we have been explaining what we know and demonstrated our understanding by addressing misconceptions when we count from 1-5. We also looked at different arrangements of 5 and thought about how we subitise.
We learnt how to program a Beebot and enjoyed exploring these with our friends.
In Dough Disco this week we pinched spikes into our playdough hedgehog and counted out 5 spikes. We also were scurrying spiders over the playdough and then got really creative and made our own play dough spiders during our Play Dough challenge – all children knew that their spider needed 8 legs.
In PSHE we read the story of Zog and thought about what he was passionate about. We thought about what the word passionate means and the things we are passionate about in Maple. Mrs Duffey is passionate about running and reading, teaching us our phonics so we can enjoy reading as much as she does! Oliver said he is passionate about football and cooking, Freya is passionate about cooking and dressing up. Jude is passionate about reading books and Gabe about running. Oscar about playing football and running, Rosalie is passionate about riding horses,
We finished our week in the library, changing our books and sharing a story, it is always such a lovely space to spend time in.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all next week.
