Starting School
At Ampney Crucis, we have a very successful induction process for new Reception children, and communications begin with their parents as soon as we are informed by Gloucestershire County Council which children will be joining us.
Every year, during Term 5, the Reception teachers visit all the children, who are due to join us in Maple Class the following September, in their normal nursery, playgroup or pre-school setting. Then, in Term 6, the children (accompanied by their parents) begin to make regular visits to the school, so that they can start to familiarise themselves with a new environment and routines. These visits, which usually take place one afternoon a week, 1.30 – 2.30pm, also enable the teachers to assess each child’s individual needs in preparation for the start of the new academic year.
Reception children can start school in different ways at Ampney Crucis - either full time from September, mornings only or a mixture of both until the October break. We encourage parents to consider this in advance and to discuss it with the teachers during one of their visits to the school. This decision can be reviewed at any time.
